Dominica... 2008
At the end of my junior year at Plattsburgh State University, I spent a month in Dominica at the Institute for Tropical Marine Ecology (ITME). Dominica is a small island located between Guadaloupe and Martinique on the eastern side of the Caribbean Sea. It is a relatively "new" island (geologically-speaking), still located over a "hot spot." It has beautiful mountains covered in rain forests, and one of only two boiling lakes in the world. It is considered the "Nature Island" of the Caribbean and holds some of the friendliest people you can find. Because the island is so mountainous, runways are short and cannot support large aircraft, which limits the amount of tourism and development on the island.
Like I mentioned, I was studying at ITME and learning about reef and sea grass bed ecology, visiting various marine ecosystems around the island. It was here where I truly fell in love with snorkeling!
I also wrote a short log every day about my adventures there, you can read it below.
